Supportive educators save students’ lives. Having just one visibly supportive educator in a school can ensure that LGBTQ students feel safe, welcomed, and encouraged to learn. Our mission is to ensure that every member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

Texas AFT is resolved to provide support and resources to local unions to engage with school district officials on the urgent need to recruit, retain, and respect LGBTQIA+ educators. Texas AFT is also resolved to oppose the passage of state laws or local policies that discriminate against students and condemns the actions taken by the Texas Legislature to condone discrimination against transgender youth.

Complaints that allege that a public school discriminates on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, or disability in admission or access to, or treatment or employment in, a school district’s programs or activities are under the jurisdiction and authority of the Office for Civil Rights (OCR). OCR and TEA enforce several federal civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination in programs or activities that receive federal funds. In addition, TEA implements a review process for school discrimination complaints and informs individuals of the appropriate complaint resolution options.
